What are the rules for filing an estimated tax return versus reconstucting certain data, such as income, for a return?

The rules start and end with a profile.

That depends upon who is elected President. If Obama is elected, you won't need to do any calculations. The return will be simplified to two lines. 1) How much did you make? 2) Send it in.

Sandy, you can get away with that because we know who you are.

Wed Edwards, that's actually a pretty good question. An estimated tax return is when you eyeball the situation, make an estimate, sign and remit.

A reconstruction is when you are audited on that same return two years later, and wonder what the hell you did on the first one, so you start reconstrucing yourself back to the level of an estimate.

If this is a trick question of some kind, I plead the 5th; and you might be doing the same if this is your normal method of operation.

P.S. And if you elect McCain for President, your grandkids and your great-grandkids will be sending it all in. Because, after all, if tax revenues don't cover war expenses, well...your kinfolk do, with interest. (Sorry Sandy, had to get that in, Smile).

You are forgiven Crow :)

Never filed an estimated tax return; guess a day will come but for now, I will go with transcripts and recreation and beg for time to complete them to keep penalties to a minimum...hehehe

Hello, my name is John Doe and I go by the nickname Wedwards. I must be fairly new here as I haven't yet entered my real information on this page to help others better judge who I am. This despite several requests and polite coaxing. I may have a hard head, or I may be registered as a sex offender and want to keep my identity secret. My vague question was meant to challenge and obscure, or I may just be out of my element. That IRSFIXER is an a**hole.

I'm not sure what's going on with the profiles here. Taxman55 had entered some information under Wedwards profile but then changed it back to the standard. Does that mean Taxman55 is Wedwards? In any case, IRS, I don't that your last sentence is appropriate.
