This may sound strange, but a new client of mine hasn't filed his tax returns from 1995 through 2002. He has filed for bankcruptcy, and the court will not discharge unless he files the returns in question. Client has no record of his income for the years in question. I advised him to see his former employer to get copies of his W-2; but unfortunately, his former employer closed down the business. The next step was to get a statement from the SSA. I know what his earnings during those years were, but have no clue as to federal income taxes (and state taxes) withheld.

Any ideas as to how I can get the required information? If I request a transcript from the IRS, will they be able to go that far back? Thanks!

I don't see what other choice you have but to try IRS.

Who probably prepared returns on his behalf for a bunch of those years.

I really doubt that, JR. I suspect the returns to be overpayments, where IRS did not prepare a SFR.
