| Is there a requirement that the tax return preparer must sign the copy of the return that is provided to the client? We are having this discussion and some CPAs contend that the client copy must have the preparer's signature. | |

| No.
Why would you? | |

| I am not sure there is any requirement but as a practice, I have always signed the client copy as well as the file copy. | |

| I never sign the client copy, if I can keep from doing so.
The client might give a copy to a bank. | |

| I always initial the client copy. Serves the purpose that I have reviewed and finalized the return. It also gives me a final "check off" that the client copy is stamped as client copy in the assembly process. | |

| You'll find additional input on signing client copies, or not, in this discussion from last year. | |

| Thanks everyone. My opinion was that we did not need to sign the client copies, and of course we signed the returns if they were being mailed in. | |

| Since I sign a copy for my file, horror of horrors, and a copy is then made for the client, I suppose I did sign the copy. Force of habit, plus I own stock in several paper companies....so sue me. | |
