Have a new Pitney Bowers meter in my office. Is the postage date, etc from that meter what controls whether a return is timely filed? Client claims its not what our meter says, but what the post office stamps on it afterwards...(sigh)... anyone know the answer?

I just brought it all to the PO and had them post marked by the post office just incase. I would like to know the actual answer as well. I got one of those meter things too =)

I can't quote anything off the top of my head but I believe the post office stamp rules here. The logic would be that you could meter stamp it and still not deliver it timely. The post office or other delivery service stamp shows that delivery was actually made.

The post office stamp controls.

What Roy says is absolutely correct. I do have one of those meters as well. But if your client is that worried about it, they can always buy their "stamps" at the post office. If you need one or two, you can buy some that have a postmark with today's date on it already up until midnight. Many post offices have them.

Agree that it's the PO mark. The other thing with the meters is you can put any date on them you want.

The postage meter date having anything to do with establishing a filing date belongs in the urban myth thread.

The Post Office is what counts. The private meters don't count. the Post office will re-cancel them.

Must be a US postmark or a mark from a "Designated Delivery Service."
