| I would like to revive the 'Physician Concierge' discussion from the end of last year. Please weigh in on whether the annual fee is deductible. I have a client who has an HSA. The code considers medical expenses for an eligible HSA expense to have the same definition as for the itemized deduction - is it just a whopper of a fee for a physical? So do you think this would be deductible? Thanks. | |

| I would vote, if I knew what I am voting about. | |

| See Pub 554... States
"* Medical services fees (from doctors, dentists, surgeons, specialists, and other medical practitioners)" are deductible.

| Roy, the question is whether this is a medical SERVICE fee or just some other type of fee | |

| From the IRS web site:
"Medical expenses include fees paid to doctors, dentists, surgeons, chiropractors, psychiatrists, psychologists, and Christian Science practitioners. Also included are payments for hospital services, qualified long–term care services, nursing services, and laboratory fees." I'll check more tomorrow.

| This is a annual fee to the doctor for the "right" for the doctor to be your "personal" physician. The doctor will provide one with their cell phone numbers. They will be on 24 hour call to their private patients/clients only. The doctor also does not tend to have 1000-2000 patients signed up to them to make the numbers work.
This is a trend for the not so rich and famous (but still well to do in my mind) but is a current trend for some doctors who are wanting to go "out on their own" and make a living and not be tied down to the HMO's / large groups that we all pay to damn much on a monthly basis for little service when we call for a physical that takes two months to get an apt. This fee is deductible most certainly as it is a fee to see the doctor but is an annual fee basis versus the copay per visit that some/most of us have to deal with when we walk in to see the doctor. Having a number of doctor's as clients - this is not a new concept to me here in CA as a number have considered this option. It is certainly deductible subjet to the 7.5% agi limitation imposed under the current tax code.
