Up to what age can parents sign a child's tax return? I thought it was 14. Please confirm.

This is an UGMA that the parents have set up for a 5yr.old child and is earning some big capital gain. Child is filing separately but is still a dependent on a parents' return.

A parent can sign a child's tax return until they are 18.

However, a child may sign his/her own return even at age 5, correct?

I believe that is true. I generally will have teenagers sign their tax returns but in many cases the parents want to sign because they don't want to remind the kid that there is money on their name.
