As many of you may have noticed, we made a few enhancements to TaxAlmanac last night. We upgraded the version of MediaWiki that we use to fix the formatting issues that Internet Explorer 7 users had been experiencing. In addition, we added buttons to the discussion forum. These buttons are now displayed on a toolbar at the top of the new forum topic and reply edit boxes. Feel free to use them to make your posts a little more dynamic. Here is a summary of what the buttons do:

Buttons

button_bold.png Bold - Press this button to add bold text. If you press it without any characters highlighted, Bold Text will be inserted, with the text in the middle highlighted. Simply start typing to change the sample text to what you really want bolded. If you select text with your mouse and then press the Bold button, the text that you had highlighted will be set to bold.

button_italic.png Italics - Press this button to add italicized text. If you press it without any characters highlighted, Italic Text will be inserted, with the text in the middle highlighted. Simply start typing to change the sample text to what you really want italicized. If you select text with your mouse and then press the Italics button, the text that you had highlighted will be set to italics.

button_underline.png Underline - Press this button to add underlined text. If you press it without any characters highlighted, Underline Text will be inserted, with the text in the middle highlighted. Simply start typing to change the sample text to what you really want underlined. If you select text with your mouse and then press the Underline button, the text that you had highlighted will be set to underlined.

button_strike.png Strikethrough - Press this button to add strikethrough text. If you press it without any characters highlighted, Strikethrough Text will be inserted, with the text in the middle highlighted. Simply start typing to change the sample text to what you really want striken through. If you select text with your mouse and then press the Strikethrough button, the text that you had highlighted will be set to strikethrough.

button_link.png TaxAlmanac (Internal) Link - Press this button to add a link to a page on TaxAlmanac, such as to a discussion or article page. If you press it without any characters highlighted, Internal Link will be inserted, with the text in the middle highlighted. Simply start typing to change the name of the page that you really want to link to. If you select a page name with your mouse and then press the TaxAlmanac Link button, the page name that you had highlighted will be set to a link.

button_extlink.png Web (External) Link - Press this button to add a link to a web page (not on TaxAlmanac). If you press it without any characters highlighted, link title will be inserted, with the text in the middle highlighted. Simply start typing to change the address and title of the page that you really want to link to. If you select a page name with your mouse and then press the Web Link button, the page name that you had highlighted will be set to a link.

button_headline.png Headline - Press this button to add a Headline. If you press it without any characters highlighted, ==Headline text== will be inserted, with the text in the middle highlighted. Simply start typing to change the name of the headline that you want to add. If you select text with your mouse and then press the Headline button, the text that you had highlighted will be set to a headline. Note that the 2 equal signs on each side means a top-level headline. For smaller headlines, add more equal signs to each side.

button_image.png Image - Press this button to add an Image. If you press it without any characters highlighted, will be inserted, with the text in the middle highlighted. Simply start typing to change the name of the image that you want to add. If you select text with your mouse and then press the Image button, the text that you had highlighted will be set to the image name. Note that the image must already reside on TaxAlmanac. Please only upload images with no copyright. We're working on obtaining more images, such as smileys and will let you know when they're available.

button_nowiki.png No Wiki - Press this button if you want to show someone how to do something without the system interpreting your text as the actual command. For example, to tell someone how to add a category, I could type the text here, but the system would think that you wanted to categorize this page. This is how you tell the system to just print it, as is, without interpretation.

button_sig.png Signature - Press this button to add your signature. When you press it, --~~~~ will be inserted. When you save the page, that will be converted to your username, a link to your user page, and the date/time stamp.

button_hr.png Horizontal Line - Press this button to add a horizontal line. When you press it, ---- will be inserted. When you save the page, that will be converted to a horizontal dividing line.

button_section.png Code Section - Press this button to add a link to an Internal Revenue Code Section. If you press it without any characters highlighted, Sec. 123 will be inserted, with the "123" highlighted. Simply start typing to change the section number that you want to link to. If you select a section number with your mouse and then press the Code Section button, the number that you had highlighted will be used.

button_regulation.png Treasury Regulation - Press this button to add a link to a Treasury Regulation Section. If you press it without any characters highlighted, Reg. 1.123-1 will be inserted, with the "1.123-1" highlighted. Simply start typing to change the section number that you want to link to. If you select a regulation number with your mouse and then press the Treasury Regulation button, the number that you had highlighted will be used.

button_publication.png Publication - Press this button to add a link to an IRS Publication. If you press it without any characters highlighted, Publication 17 will be inserted, with the "17" highlighted. Simply start typing to change the publication number that you want to link to. If you select a publication number with your mouse and then press the Publication button, the number that you had highlighted will be used.

button_revenueruling.png Revenue Ruling - Press this button to add a link to a Revenue Ruling. If you press it without any characters highlighted, Rev. Rul. YYYY-NN will be inserted, with the "YYYY-NN" highlighted. Simply start typing to change the ruling number that you want to link to. If you select a ruling number with your mouse and then press the Revenue Ruling button, the number that you had highlighted will be used. Note that YYYY-NN is the format from the year 2000 onwards, but before that, a two digit year was used.

Blr: Look at the reply edit window at the bottom of this page. See the buttons just above it? Click in the reply edit window and start pressing the buttons. Play with it. Experiment.

I see the edit buttons now. Earlier this morning, I thought something looked different, but with my head pounding, I didn't stop to think about it. Great job, Tim!

Some say "it's beginning to look like tax season." I say, "it's beginning to look like the coolest tax site" Thanks Tim.

Let me know if you think they're too small, too big, not understandable, etc. Also, if you have ideas for more, just let me know - I found a very talented graphic artist within the company and he's offered to make more for us.

Swords and Fireballs? Hmmm... Can you point me to an example? Image:bigsmile.jpg

Spell Check: For now, we're encouraging users to use the spell check features included in new browsers. For more information, see Discussion:Spell Check Feature.

Someone asked for them when the smiley idea came up a couple of months ago, I thought it was funny. Sorry, I don't have an example and it's probably best they aren't included. I would have launched more then a few fireballs when that darn *House Buyout* thread was in vogue. Image:bigsmile.jpg
