I have a client whose company paid for him to move from MD to GA. The list of reimbursed expenses includes a hodge-podge mix of deductible and non-deductible expenses that were reimbursed. The company also paid for real estate commissions and the tax on the total distributions. Unfortunately, the company grossed up the w-2 taxable wages by the entire reimbursements, without separating out the box 12 reimbursements.

Publication 521 suggests that I simply file form 3903 and list all deductible expenses with zero reimbursements, which I plan to do.

I do have one question about the cost to turn on utilities and phone/internet/cable. Security deposits are excluded as a deductible moving expense but some of the utilities and/or cable companies include a security deposit....heck, all the charges some charge are nothing but security deposits. I interpret security deposits to be the deposits on apartments, for instance. Do you agree? There is no good way to figure how much of the costs of turning on utilities/phone/etc. are deposits and which are just fees. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Michael

Typically these utility, telephone and cable deposits are down payments towards the monthly bills. New residence personal expenses unless home office percentage can be taken.
