A and B are unmarried co-owners and cohabitants. A wrote a check for $2000 each month to B. Then B wrote a check for $2,100 to the mortgage company. If B agrees not to deduct any mortgage interest, can A deduct some of all of the interest?

This seems to be a common scenario but I could find a relevant discussion.

If they are co-owners then yes she can.

What connection is there between A's check for $2,000 paid to B and the mortgage payment that's being made by B? Without something to tie A's payment to B to the mortgage payment and to the interest, A's check could be for anything! Is there a notation on the check, and what should it be if the mortgage interest deduction is to become A's?

I'm curious, not challenging.

As far as I know, there is nothing in the memo. The statute, regs and publication say "paid" but offer no detail on what "paid" means.
