Hey all,

I just found this great site containing a free mileage log generator. If you are taking a mileage expense tax deduction on your return (schedule C or otherwise) you may like this. If you don't keep a log, forgot to or if you just need one for backup in case you get audited this tool comes in handy. It saved me, so I thought I'd pass it along you all of you in case you may need it or know someone in a jam. The site is:

http://www.mileagepal.com

Hope this helps.

Regards, Icabod

Can someone verify that this isnt' a pay site?

I went to the site and it looks to be free. I'll let the community decide about the ethics of reconstructing mileage logs by a computer program though.

If only it gave a reason for the mileage too

I wouldn't call this program 'reconstructing' a mileage log. How about falsifying?

Exactly. Can the site generate bogus receipts and really help us cheat?! Tim, this link should be removed.

I can see one good use for this calculator, though. As the client studies the ceiling reconstructing his business mileage for the past year, insert the figures into the caculator and show him the result. If it turns out he has to drive 1500 miles a day to equal his claim he might be interested in going back to study his shoes this time and recalculate.

I agree with Kirthe & Jdugancpa. The link should be removed. This is lying. If the IRS finds out that the taxpayer they are auditing is using this there will be trouble I am sure.

Site requires a "donation" to work per instructions at top of page.

Am I correct that a calendar where you just write your appointments is a sufficient contemporaneous milage log (even if miles are not included in the log)? I have separate records with addresses for these appointments and I can mapquest the milage at a later date.

not worth any donations. IMO.

My understanding of the mileage log is that you also need to keep track of your beginning and ending mileage for each trip. Although for the tax return you only need to supply the beginning and ending mileage for the year.

I've never understood why people have such a problem with mileage logs. I keep a spiral notebook in the door pocket. Every time I start the car, I write down the mileage and where I'm going (whether it's a client, the bank or the grocery). It's very simple and it's an easy habit. (But there again, I'm an anal-retentive geek!Image:smile.jpg)

I double checked that you had hyphenated anal-retentive, so I guess that makes me, too.

What about those of us who are also obsessive-compulsive along with anal-retentive. No wonder 'they' never let me out of the office. Which means I don't need that elusive contemporanious mileage log :-)

Just found this discussion on a Google search for mileage log generator. Mileagepal.com worked great! They expect a donation now, but it was definetly worth the few bucks I threw their way. Thanks for the recommendation!

Well aren't you cleaver WW to think to use the exact phrase "mileage log generator" when doing a Google search.
