Client is a non practicing doctor who maintains his medical license (fee paid to the State) in order to write prescriptions for his family. He has no income from a medical practice (don't know about any plans but I believe he is retired). Is the license fee deductible? I wouldn't think so but I'm looking for confirmation. Thanks.

If the doctor is writing prescriptions for his family, I don't believe he can be called a non-practicing doctor. However, even if he is practicing medicine he is not engaged in the business of medicine. If he has no business, it would seem he has no deductible business expenses.

Rev Ruling 77-32 might be of help.
