| I have a client who pays all of her daughters medical bills. She also pays for over 1/2 of the support for her daugher including her long term health care. Can she deduct her daughers medical bills on her return. | |

| Only if daughter qualifies as a dependent. (Your title indicates daughter is not a dependent). | |

| The daughter does not qualify as her dependant because she is over 19 and not a full time student under the age 24. What I have been reading she can qualify as a qualifying relative and if the mother pays over 1/2 her support she doesnt have to meet the gross income test. Please clarify.Thank-you | |

| You are correct. Medical deduction "dependent" does not need to meet same tests as "dependent for exemption". Gross income test is dropped. | |

| Under Sec. 213(a), only tests A, C, and D of Sec. 152(d)(1) need be satisfied to qualify for the medical expense deduction. The gross income test is not relevant here.
A) Relationship. C) Support. D) Not a qualifying child. | |
