That's long enough. Rise and shine! So tell me, look out the windows there in Santa Fe, which I've not been privileged yet to visit, and what's it look like? Blue skies, clear mountains, chilis for breakfast?

70 degrees, blue skies and breakfast burritos here in Northern California.

I wish it would rain. I want the whole world to stay indoors today.

JR1 (talk|edits) said:

Yeah, I know the feeling. I don't the want the first 70 degree day until I'm sitting in the driveway in my lawnchair sipping champagne at 3:00 on the 17th of April.

JR - glad to hear someone else doesn't do the midnight panicked run to the post office thing! I REFUSE to do it. Every year I'm sitting by my pool reading a book and drinking a beer no later than 3:00. This year will be a little different since it's our 8 year anniversary. (Yes - I got married right after tax season. My wonderful husband did all the arrangements and put it together in only five weeks. Now you know why I married him!!)

Damnit!!! No later than 3:00 BL? I have the clients from "hell"....they come in when I am busy; door is open, they walk in and I lose 2 to 3 hours every day...so I back up my "rum" time until at the earliest 5:00...isn't it 5:00 somewhere????

Sandy - it's a brief break. The next day starts trying to cram three weeks worth of a payroll tax month into two weeks.

Oh and did I mention that it's Spring Training and I'm too busy to go? :(

And in IL, the sales taxes are due the 20th. Doesn't look like a day off this year, tho' I won't answer the phone on the 18th.

Bottom Line (talk|edits) said:

FL sales tax also due on 20th. Fortunately I only have 6-7 of those. Can't wait until August when Liquor tax goes away. That's due on the 15th.

Penalty after the 20th in Florida, my clients who I do sales tax for wonder why I wait until the last day...since the form says due on the 1st....come on you guys.....PENALTY AFTER...so if I am not penalized prior to...then that is my due date....clients...uugghh

You all get up to darn early! It is Saturday morning for goodness sakes.......

Bottom Line (talk|edits) said:

I've been able to train mine that the due date is the 20th. The newbies panic about the sales tax and the UCT-6 until I've explained it to them a couple of times. Once they've gotten comfortable that I've got it under control, they completely forget about it until I call to schedule an appointment.

Would anyone like to share how they fall asleep after working 14 hours days. I work until 10 or 11 at night but can't fall asleep. The numbers keep running thru my head. I finally get up have a beer or two, try to unwind but just can't seem to. Then the morning comes and I can't wake up. I'm back at my desk by 8, have a Mountain Dew and start the whole cycle again.

I'm with you, Karen. Your days/nights sound identical to mine. Work very late, can't sleep, have adult beverages, struggle to get out of bed, 6 pack of diet coke before noon. Some days my "fuse" is shorter than others.

Bottom Line (talk|edits) said:

13 March 2007
I try to do something other than taxes about 30 minutes before bedtime. I keep a very boring book or magazine by the bed. A couple of pages of that usually helps. Although every 4-5 days I can't sleep. Generally catch up a couple of days later. The last couple of weeks I've been thinking about a business opportunity that I was only a few hours too late for. It's not completely dead yet but almost so. Driving me crazy. I could have retired!!

I'm working about 10 hours a day right now (not a lot compared to some of you guys -- but it's up there) If I don't think that I'm getting enough sleep -- I run around with my 4 year old (keeping up with him will wear anyone down)

SKPCPA (talk|edits) said:

13 March 2007
10 hours a day with a 4 year old is pretty impressive. I read a book - for me it has to be something interesting to take my mind off the numbers. If the book isn't enough then a little Mudslide usually helps. I gave up the diet cokes last fall and am struggling to get through this seaon without. Santa Fe, huh?? Those hatch chilies are to die for!!

Thanks...I'm about ready to crash right now and I've only been home for about an hour. My husband wants me to do the bank rec...because he can't figure out how to check off the cleared items on the bank statement in Quicken...don't think that it's gonna happen right now because I'm ready to sleep right where I'm sitting...

Laticiaw (talk|edits) said:

Husband is still asking for the darn bank rec...going to have to do it...don't know if it'll be done right...but I'll have the darn thing done...

I do my best work in the mornings and come in when I wake up - usually arriving at 5:00am. I go home around 8:30pm and see what my wife and 2 1/2 year old did during the day and wind down by reading a book until I fall asleep.

This morning I overslept until 5 till 6:00, losing 2 hours of work!

Calms Forte, very gentle, absolutely no hangover, sweet, gentle, restful sleep.

Hyland's Insomnia, the same. New Chapter Tranquilnite, a little heavier, still no hangover.

Karen258,

My friend went to a sleep lab and they told her to "imagine yourself filing away your thoughts/problems in a file cabinet." It really works for me! Plus, I tell myself, "there is nothing you can do about it now, it will be there in the morning." I then I quickly nod off!:o)

By the way, this is my FIRST REAL TAX SEASON and I can't WAIT to relax after April 17th! My friends and I are going to the annual TAX PARTY given by one of our local banks here.

Is it wrong to prepare taxes while drinking wine? :oP

Gmacdon167 (talk|edits) said:

13 March 2007
MsTwizz, I strongly discourage the practice. I am continuously second guessing if I handled a situation on a return I prepared sober at 3:00 this afternoon, let alone one that I did after a cocktail. At least with the first, I can be relatively assured that I did indeed include everything. With the "evening" return, I'd have to go back and review the entire return just to be sure.

I swear that only during tax season, I have a mild case of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). Because I try to "segment" all of my returns and handle them independently, I feel I'm not even really sure what happened with the return I prepared earlier in the day. Does anyone else do this? I mean like, "Oh crap, did I sign that?" or "Did I remember to go back and adjust that item?"

If I were drinking, even a small amount, I would go crazy.

MsTwizz (talk|edits) said:

13 March 2007
I'm sorry. I don't want to give you the impression that I'm drinking wine all night! I do have a glass when I come home from work with dinner.

Yea, I know what you mean about trying to remember what I did on a return. Many times I think, "did I do that?" and open the return to make sure I remembered something. I think that's normal....I hope! :o)

Gmacdon167 (talk|edits) said:

Just messing with you MsTwizz. Not implying that you are downing cocktails preparing returns. I know exactly what you mean.

I am a morning person, too. During tax season, I go to bed about 9pm and wake up around 4am. As April 15th approaches, the 4am becomes 3am and then 2am. We have several preparers in the office. Everyone else works late. So I am the only one here in the morning. Quiet and productive, except when I am on this forum.

I would really love to have a drink when I go home. A glass of wine is good. Blue Sapphire on the rocks with 2 onions is better.

However, when I don't get a full night's sleep I can sure feel that 1 drink in the morning. So, I pretty much abstain during tax season. I'm not Catholic, but feel like I'm in lent.

Gotta St. Patty's party to go to on Saturday. Will have to sleep in on Sunday.

Nigeria.

It's different than the kind that we have here in the states. More alcohol and the color completely blocks out all light.

I learned this fun fact at a Beer Tasting I attended on a cruise in January. I also did the Tequila tasting...can't remember any fun facts from that.

Nigeria. That's a surprise.

Interestingly enough, Guiness over here doesn't taste like it does over there. It's not bad, mind you, but there is something magical about having a Guiness in Ireland.

According to celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, Guiness is not just a drink (and the best drink in the world), it's also a food (maybe it should be it's own food group).

PVVCPA (talk|edits) said:

Apparently Guiness is prescribed some doctors. Great source of iron if you are anemic or pregnant.

You folks are whacked! Except for PVV which the nearest to normal that I've found. Ay a Guiness man! First off, work is NOT your freakin' life and some of you are confusing the two. Work is what you do to HAVE life. Get it? So, then, put boundaries up. Hard ones. Your kids will grow up and those old tax returns? Shreds, my friends. Do NOT put your life into something that doesn't last. Spend time with your spouse...it will pay off when they realize that they are your life. Your clients do NOT love you, OK? They barely tolerate most of us. With all that said, ten hours is plenty. It's a rare day that I work ten, but that's me. Relax. Get some down time. You're not useful if you're as strung up as a crack addict because you don't know how to stop. Darn, I guess I should get to work now.

I keep getting interrupted by clients. And now, my daughter's soccer team needs a coach this season and stupid me couldn't say no (soccer is my sport). Nothing like a good "football" match and a pint of Guiness, just not around the kids, though.
