I'm just venting here folks... Well, either Sat. or Sun. of last week, a big automated update went through from Windows, Sun. 21st, I get the Blue Screen of Death. I asked my repair guy if it ever happens that an update can trigger a disaster: answer, sometimes, yes....

Can I bill Windows for my time and trouble? I don't know enough to actually blame them with legal proof, and besides I'm sure there's miles of fine print... It's very discouraging when Windows/Microsoft conintually makes itself at home in my system, and I have no idea what they're doing. Does anyone else here get p*ssed at the intrusiveness of Microsoft? Arrgh, what can you do?

CrowJD,

I've never had a BSOD from an update.

BSOD's (Blue Screen's of Death) may not be difficult to overcome in XP. You can always go back to "Last Known Good Configuration" (that's the nomenclature Windows XP uses) when you restart Windows.

I've given up being p.o.'d about this stuff. It's not worth it anymore. It's a fact of life and it's just not worth being ticked off about anymore.

You could always buy a Mac, but that's another headache unto itself. You just pay twice as much for everything. I was a dedicated Mac user for years, but Job's insistence at a closed platform and my client's migration to Windows made it impossible for me to stick with Mac. I caved because "resistance is futile." Apple, and I dare say Job's, would dominate the PC market today if he hadn't been short-sighted about keeping Mac a "closed" architecture system. Besides, it's no secret Job's "borrowed" (and so did everyone else) the idea for the graphical user interface (GUI) system from Xerox, who got it from Stanford Research Institute.

Anyway, people panic too quickly about BSOD's. While annoying and heart-stopping, over the last 4 1/2 years, I've recovered 98% of the time from everyone. The 2% were actually motherboard failures and a new motherboard later, I was back in business.

You're right, they essentially have de facto monopoly status, what can you do?

I think I also need to look for another computer person that is a little more patient, or get some better education myself. My problem is when I try to read a reference book or even a help screen on the subject of "computer" in general, I find myself falling asleep. lol. I just want it to work....waaaaa!

Crow, there was a discussion about the Windows update a few weeks ago. You don't have to install all of the updates automatically. I still haven't installed the update that caused a lot of problems with Intuit products. I tell my PC when to install, and that's when I feel comfortable that the other software vendors have worked out solutions.

Oh, and Macs aren't perfect either. A few years ago they had the "click of death."
