Does the IRS have a site where you can search out a particular company to get their address, EIN, etc? I'm trying to determine what address the IRS has on file for a client. Thanks.

why don't you just ask your client what address they want to use? Or can't you find the client?

I believe that filing a return with a new address will cause the IRS to update their records.

Go to the IRS website, enter in their address and their EIN, and it will bring up the information you want.

[P.S. I thought only charities had all this information plastered on the IRS site.]

This is a charity. I went to irs.gov and entered their ein and got no results. I entered their name and got no results. Where are you supposed to enter the info? Thanks.

I have never done this before.

Maybe you have to go the the Exempt Organization section of the site. Or try to find a number for EO and call them and ask them.

It's also possible that the organization you are looking for is merely posing as a 501(c)(3)?

or has never filed a tax return

Sorry, let me clarify. I'm doing pro bono work for a workforce housing community land trust here in town. They are just getting started this year and applied for a small ($300) grant from a union foundation. The foundation came back with a letter saying that the "current information published by the IRS indicates another address..." than the address we used on the grant application. I don't know if the IRS is using the address in the SS4 application or the 501(c)(3) application which is different so I figured I'd look for it on the IRS site. I have also never searched out a company on the irs site so I tried it without luck. I feel like a dope calling the union foundation asking them how they got the address from the IRS given the three letters that follow my name. I know I could call the IRS but I'm curious if there is a way to search out a company that is registered with the IRS.

Another advantage of being an EA - nobody at the union foundation would know what that meant, so they wouldn't think you're a dope for asking the question.

Maybe this will help:

Bingo! but it doesn't give the address. Getting close. Thanks.

I just spoke to the person at the union's matching gifts program. They have access to the IRS charities data base. that's how they got the information on my client. It is not generally accessible.

Just for future use, Paul, you might get faster good answers if you gave better info up front. A charity is not really a 'company'.

Agree, Kevin, thanks.

Another option would be to just state that nonprofits, especially small ones, change addresses often when new treasurers come on board.

Also check with the state Secretary of State registration. Most of these are on line now, and to alot of people, the IRS and State are the same, and use the name interchangable. So, the state may be where they are getting the address???

Whenever I want to look up info on a charity, I use Guidestar (see link below).

You can "register" for free and get access to tax returns filed, etc. You sign also sign up and pay to get access to even more, which I have never done so don't know if it would be worth it or not.

I know that you can search by EIN or name, etc. but don't know how quickly new organizations show up.

Try guidestar.org. It may be just for 501(c)(3)'s; that's all I've used it for. You do have to register, but it's free.

(edit - phone rang & Joan beat me to the post...)

Dress up as a poor person and wonder the streets.* If the charity is any good, they will find you.

And, if they're like these Mega-churches down here, they are likely to pick you up in a Rolls Royce.

  • Since we're in the middle of a steep "recession" you may need to go for the really poor look: rags, cardboard sandles, empty gin bottle, etc.

You may also want to try www.melissadata.com/lookups/np.asp

This is a nonprofit website and you should be able to find any address for any nonprofit out there.

I hadn't heard of that site Genskitty. The nice thing is it does include other types of nonprofits, not just the (c)(3)s, but I did notice a couple of minor errors.
