| Every year the first few weeks seem to define how my tax season is going to go. This year I'm thinking of having an exorcism - anyone want to come to Hawaii to perform this? My car died two weeks ago, for good this time I think, followed quickly by my mom passing away since I'm the sibling in charge this has taken the better part of the last two weeks and it was just a grueling experience, I just returned yesterday. Then when I ran through my messages, one client is in a panic with a letter from the state wanting to do an audit back to 1993. He came in as soon as he knew I was back, and this letter has far reaching implications, told him I didn't want to do this audit and he seriously needs to be talking with a tax lawyer. Then I asked a lawyer in my building for a referral, when I gave him the skeleton version of what was going on, he seriously suggested a good litigation lawyer from Honolulu because there is only one tax lawyer on our island and the lawyer didn't seem to have a great deal of confidence in the other person's ability. Maybe if I just salted the office it would help. Any suggestions are appreciated - even funny ones. | |

| Yuch. You've got the year from H**L starting. My sympathies. | |
| February 15, 2008 | |
| You might want to check the HSCPA website. Some tax attorneys are also CPAs. | |
| February 16, 2008 | |
| I'm sorry to hear about your mom. My condolences to you. | |

| for now, just take it one day at a time, that's all you can do. hang in there ! | |
| 16 February 2008 | |
| My condolences as well Action.
You do get the award so far, however I might be running right behind you. My wife's aunt died this week, a dear friend and mentor suffered a major heart attack. Too many client issues to deal with. It's an Irish thing to wear your heart on your sleeve, I guess. But, hey, I look on the bright side, I could be a Patriots fan. Tom

| I have to re-visit here. Thanks all for you condolences. Mid February has been a really hard time, but we have to move on. Tom, I'm sorry to hear of your wife's aunt.
I'm just wondering if this is something new, what do you think. One of my client's gave me a card of condolence and included a check for $100 as a "bereavment donation". Is that something new? It's a little embarassing and I am thinking of donating it to one of my mom's favorite charities.
Bottom Line (talk|edits) said: | 27 February 2008 |
| I've never heard of a bereavement donation. I wonder if it's similar to a memorial. I'd tend to agree with donating it to one of your mom's favorite charities (make sure it doesn't conflict with your client's beliefs). Let your client know that you sent it to charity and that it was one of your mom's favorites. If there's a story why it's a favorite, include that. | |
| February 28, 2008 | |
| Action, my husband is from the mid-west (Illinois) and the bereavement donation is very common there. I had never heard of such a thing until my father-in-law died in 1990; the money is mostly used to help with funeral and wake costs (it's a farming communtiy - not a lot of economic activity). I would go with the donation idea in your case. And so sorry for your loss; losing your parents is so very hard...and during tax season....really unfair. | |

| And now it ends - this week will be a scramble to complete all extensions and try to book a flight to Los Angeles for my dad's funeral. I can't believe a tax season could be so defined by my parents. | |
| 6 April 2008 | |
| Action,
I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time. I know you lost your mom earlier this season. Best wishes, Tom
| April 6, 2008 | |
| Action,
This makes me step back & realize how unimportant tax season is in the grand scheme of things. <<<<<<<<<<< BIG HUG >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Wish there was more I could do for you. You have been given too much to handle in a short period of time; it's almost inconceivable. Condolences, Belle 14:53, 6 April 2008 (CDT)
| 6 April 2008 | |
| Action,
I can't imagine how hard this season must have been. Be strong and know that our thoughts are with you. Fred
| 7 April 2008 | |
| Action - there are no words. Take care of yourself as best as you possibly can to get through this. | |

| A little off topic, but as some of you are in the tropics, I thought this might give you a smile. My husband often goes up to our cabin a couple of weekends during tax season, and I can't go along. It's a bummer bc we love being up there any time of year. It's a double bummer bc when he's gone, I also have to do double duty around the house (ok, so I usually do 1.5 duty anyway, but nontheless). Well, he went up this weekend and got caught in a spring snow storm (Hah!): | |
| 8 April 2008 | |
| Joyce,
That's beautiful! Better than my view of the mailbox on the corner of my street. Tom
| April 8, 2008 | |
| I like the measuring stick in the corner.....I may do that next winter. Except I'll need one that measures in feet (I live at 6500 feet, Sierra Nevada). It's always fun to be able to compare notes of "I got 26" last night vs I got 2 feet. And given my profession <wink>, I do like to be accurate. | |
| 8 April 2008 | |
| Tom - it's overcast and only in the 40's here, so maybe that will make you feel a little better! | |
| April 8, 2008 | |
| Actually, it has been a little chilly the past few days.
Ww, that is beautiful! I haven't seen anything like that in years. It's so peaceful.
| 8 April 2008 | |
| I guess 65 is cold in Hawaii.
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! I'm turning blue just thinking about it! Will the whining never end in the tropics? Tom
| April 9, 2008 | |
Kilauea is producing plenty of vog today, but the heat doesn't travel this far.
Oh good grief. | |
| 9 April 2008 | |
| Finish client's return today and it's ugly. He's a priest making a salary which isn't much, but he also doesn't make much in stipends. Yet somehow he spent everything and then some on business. He has no other sources of income from what I can tell. I don't know what to do. I've never had this problem before and I know he isn't lying to me about what he made and spent as the superiors are very strict about the returns being filed properly.
What to do, what to do.... Tom
| 9 April 2008 | |
| Tom, at this point, you have to lay the Code down, and counsel the poor fellow from the Scriptures. Start with "render unto Ceasar..." :)
Seriously, is he saying he had a lot of unreimbursed business epenses? If something doesn't seem right, then follow your intuition. It's usually correct, and then you are in the delicate position of trying to elicit more facts from the parson. This is the way to proceed. The confidentiality privilege of CPAs (or anyone) does not cover return preparation itself. Therefore, you ask to make your confession to the priest. In it, bring up your issues, and be assured that, as long as you don't waive your confessional rights, all matters to be discussed will be held inviolate.
| 9 April 2008 | |
| I've taken all his reimbursements and included them as income and subtracted the expenses. I even took some things that looked personal and left them off. It looks more reasonable. The initial schedule was "AUDIT HERE FIRST!!!!!" material. It was similar to that discussion I posted entitled: Discussion:Amazing, simply amazing...

| How about a joke? Thought it fitting that you are discussing the priest....I don't know about you but I need a few laughs..
Muldoon lived alone in the Irish countryside with only a pet dog for company. One day the dog died, and Muldoon went to the parish priest and asked, "Father, my dog is dead. Could ya' be saying' a mass for the poor creature?" Father Patrick replied, "I'm afraid not; we cannot have services for an animal in the church. But there are some Baptists down the lane, and there's no tellin' what they believe. Maybe they'll do something for the creature." Muldoon said, "I'll go right away Father. Do y a' think $5,000 is enough to donate to them for the service?" Father Patrick exclaimed, "Sweet Mary, Mother of Jesus! Why didn't ya tell me the dog was Catholic
| 9 April 2008 | |
| LOL. He saw the light did he, Nancy? Listen, I'm Catholic. Years ago, when I had more energy, I sat on the Finance Council of my parish. The diocesan priest had a pretty good amount of power in those days (they still do), and really, I considered being on that committee a formality. Anyway, the parish is in a downtown area, and sometimes, especially in December, the priest would just hand out money to distressed people. No accountability whatsoever, totally up to him.
I have seen Religious and Priests get themselves into a pickle, mainly because they are rather naive, and like to think the best of people. Some even get blackmailed. Seriously doubt any such issues exist with Tom's client! I was kidding about the confession.
| 9 April 2008 | |
| Gee Crow, I didn't know they had Catholics in GA!!! LOL! Kidding of course.
This guy is a nice guy, just not sure he knows that not every meal he buys is deductible. Someone told him it was, of course. So he thinks that every time he went to dinner, it's a tax break. Ugh. Tom
| 9 April 2008 | |
| Oh yes, we are opening up new parishes down here like crazy as people continue to move into the Sunbelt. Wait until they experience some of our insane traffic, and they'll wish they had never left home. | |
Actionbsns (talk|edits) said: | 9 April 2008 |
| Crow, if you want traffic, come to Kona. We have a bazillion people on our side of the Island and two, two lane roads. They are fixing one of the roads so it will be two lanes in each direction for about five miles, then back to two. On top of that we have a volcano down the road that is spewing out SO2 in rather high levels right now and they are encouraging evacuation in certain areas (where do you go when they suggest evacuating an island?). And, before I forget, it's cold!!! We're back to the quilt added to the regular blanket at night and a sweater on top of the sweats in the morning. However, when the VOG blows away, the ocean is beautiful. | |
| April 9, 2008 | |
| Tom, you need to come and visit for a while so you can understand what he have to go through out here! | |
| 9 April 2008 | |
| I had 'Mom' duty today. Whenever I'm at her house, I'm always doing some chore or other. The sun finally came out this afternoon, and I actually got to work in the garden - first time this year. Man, was that ever nice.
BTW - the cabin (in the Arrowhead), got another 8 inches after the first 20, and they are under a blizzard warning today. Guess I'm not missing out on any gardening up there. Too bad, bc the snow was almost gone last week.
| April 9, 2008 | |
| And I'll bet your garden is bigger than the 2' x 3' garden we have, isn't it Ww? Do you need help planting? | |
| 10 April 2008 | |
| Just slightly bigger - about a quarter acre for vegetables and a ton of various flower gardens. That's the tradeoff of living somewhere less popular. You, however, can grow a much bigger variety! Our university here is really coming up with some great hybrids for growing in colder climates. And of course, global warming has moved us up a zone for growing.
Do I need help planting???? Of course I do! My husband jokes that everyone should be very afraid to take a tour of my gardens with me because I will draw them into the insanity. I hope to become a master gardener someday, which would give me a good excuse to have a greenhouse!
| 10 April 2008 | |
| As my daughter has ventured farther and farther into the world of dating, I have become very good friends with various gardeners, farmers and excavating companies.
Bodies buried underneath fields of corn tend not to be found.
| April 10, 2008 | |
| Fred, you're too much. We don't need all of this detail -- it might get us into trouble some day. | |
| April 10, 2008 | |
| I just realized I have to define "us" before you twist that around. "Us" = the users of this forum. | |
| 10 April 2008 | |
| Fred,
My wife asked me right after my daughter was born how was I going to handle it when she was old enough to date. I said, "She can do whatever she wants once she's out of the convent." But maybe there is some merit to making friends with farmers and excavating contractors. Natalie's getting handy with the smileys!!!! Tom
| April 10, 2008 | |
| I sure am. Here's one for you, Tom.
(I couldn't find one with popcorn.)
| 10 April 2008 | |
| Natalie has too much time on her hands Tom, she should get out of the dang garden, stop riding bikes and start preparing some dag gum tax returns.
As for "us" Natalie, I think they all know what "we" have. lol. shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Tom, have I mentioned my wall of weapons tactic?
| 10 April 2008 | |
| I think you did Fred.
Seems Natalie does have too much time on her hands. I did not enjoy yesterday. Long-time friend and client reamed me out over the fact their return won't be done before they leave tomorrow. Their S corp books are a mess because my bookkeeper made a whole bunch of mistakes and I couldn't believe it. Just adds to my frustrations this year. Been up since 4:30am and only on my computer since 5:00am since it reset itself sometime last night (darn Windows updates!). Ugh. Tom
| 10 April 2008 | |
| I am known to repeat myself sometimes.
Did I mention that I repeat myself? Yeah, having my third cup of coffee now. Trying to get all my reading and email stuff done before I hit the office. I'll get in by 8 leave at 10. That's plenty. I sit here, type a few lines. Review a return, wait for my ride. and go, I think I can, I think I can, I know I can I know I can.
| 10 April 2008 | |
| Well, I am off the office supply store for envelopes. Then to Starbucks for an overpriced cup of coffee.
Tom | |
| 10 April 2008 | |
| Reminds me of an old Saturday Night Live skit:
Here, take this. It makes you nervous. OK, here's too much money.
| April 10, 2008 | |
| Well, actually, I don't have too much time on my hands. I've been working on this reconciliation for a client, and I need a lot of breaks. Client has a trust account (for property owners) and is supposed to know whose money is in there. For 1.5 years, they haven't done a reconciliation. (Hmmm, I think I said this once before. I hope whatever Fred has, it's not contagious.)
Before I do that, however, I think it's time for a nap. By the way, Fred, riding my bike and working out are what allow me to get by on four to five hours of sleep a night. And speaking of gardening, maybe you should take it up -- keep those hands of yours busy. It's also very therapeutic.
| April 10, 2008 | |
| I just went out to get the mail. I was dressed in my sweat pants, t-shirt, sweat shirt, socks and slippers (Hawaiian slippers), and the mailman asked me, "Hey, where are you working today? Alaska?" | |
| 10 April 2008 | |
| Alright Natalie - let's trade. I'll even take the 40's and overcast that I complained about the other day. It's in the 30's and falling, with high winds. The rain has turned to snow and ice pellets - make that bullets - coming down at a 45 degree angle. Makes me even more thankful that I got my time outside yesterday, though. Apparently that was our one shot at the sun this week. I think the IRS planned this though because it's supposed to get nice next WEDNESDAY! | |
| April 10, 2008 | |
| No penguins . . . polar bear. Boy, did he look mean!
| |
| 11 April 2008 | |
| See Joyce. What did I tell you?
I just realized I had my poles mixed up. I really meant to say Antarctica, but you get the point. Now during the summer, I am sure that we will be treated to how hot it is in beautiful, tropical, Hawaii. We will hear stories of the VOG and tsunami warnings and kvetching how life in paradise is so awful. I sure hope at some point, Fred will have won the People's Party nomination for President when in November he will win a 50-state victory clobbering the other two miserable main line party candidates. At that point, he will fly Air Force One to Hawaii whisking his hot tropical Hawaiian flower Natalie to Washington, DC to be his First Lady, where she will be waited on hand and foot by Fred and the over protective Secret Service. Fred's first Presidential act will be to sign an Executive Order adopting a "shoot first, ask questions later policy" for the Secret Service, CIA and FBI towards any man who comes within a gnat's eyelash of Natalie or his daughter. As a result, Natalie will become a prisoner in the White House Rose Garden being forced to enjoy the hot, hazy, humid, weather that accompanies every summer here in Washington, DC since as we all know DC was built on a swamp. Tom
| 11 April 2008 | |
| Did I just get married while my back was turned? Dang, see what tax season does to some people.
Musta been the tequila.
| April 11, 2008 | |
| There's only one problem with that plan, Tom. I don't think my husband would care for it too much. | |
| 11 April 2008 | |
| Well, he might, if he knew that he could come along and were were adding Belle and Action as well. Dang, that musta been one hell of a tequila night. Oh, and let's not forget to tell him about the Hooters entourage. | |
| April 11, 2008 | |
| Great idea. Now remember, when you're in politics, there are certain rules you have to abide by. One of them is remembering everyone who helped you along the way. So I think you need to bring in Pierce, Ww and probably some others as well. And we definitely have to make sure Tom is rewarded with a nice, big, fire-proof kitchen. | |
| 11 April 2008 | |
| Husband? Does Fred know? If he didn't, he does now!
Fred, are you going to show him the wall of weapons? Tom
| April 11, 2008 | |
| Bird's out of the cage now. I mean, the cat's out of the bag. In fact, the cat's chasing the bird. Ooooooh, I can't look. | |
| 11 April 2008 | |
| Nah, wall of weapons is only for daughters suitors. Me, I don't enter peoples homes uninvited ;-)
Time to do the taxes. | |
| 13 April 2008 | |
| Well, I am about to jump out of my skin.
My long-time assistant, who has a tendency to ask me to do her kid's returns and their boyfriends or girlfriends, just stopped by. Seems one of the boyfriends, whose return I did, is mad. He owed money, but it wasn't my doing of course. His employer screwed up and also put the wrong SS# on his W-2. I told him there was no point in filing until it he got the correct paperwork as it would have come back. Well, she just walked in while I was on the phone with a client, picked up his folder and told me he was going to do his own return and walked out. If I wasn't on the phone with a client, I would have gone on a tirade. The absolute nerve of them to waste my time. He is getting a bill for my time or she is, but someone's going to pay. This really frosts me to no end. Tom
| 13 April 2008 | |
| If you're that frosted Tom, just head to the kitchen, burn something and use the heat to eliminate the cold. Or, just go visit my little Hawaiin <sp?> flowers and seeing them will surely warm your heart. | |
| 13 April 2008 | |
| I am going to make popcorn and if the kitchen blows up, so be it.
Of course, all the women here warm my heart. Tom
| 13 April 2008 | |
| Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww | |
| April 15, 2008 | |
One hour and 10 minutes to e-file a state withholding return, three federal extensions and one partnership return! I think the Pandora Radio is slowing down my computer Fred. Do you notice your computer slowing down when you have Pandora on?
| 15 April 2008 | |
| Yes. Sometimes. I will sometimes use my laptop to listen to the music. everything slows puter down. hate it.
almost time for tequila
