Husband files HOH supports kids and lived separate from wife for more than the last 6 months. How does the wife file? MFS or Single?

MFS unless she can be considered unmarried per the HOH rules.

To be unmarried under the HOH rules, she would also need a qualifying relative living with her for more than 1/2 of the year in her residence.

Because the wife is still married and is considered married for tax purposes, despite her husband's filing status.

Since she is married, is not filing a joint return, and (presumably) doesn't meet the HOH requirements, she must file MFS.

"supports kids and lived separate from wife ". Just to clarify the obvious, Neal, to file HOH kids must have lived with him for more than 1/2 year and she must not have lived with him for the last six months of the year. If kids lived with wife, he cannot claim HOH status even if he did support the kids.

The old language was - Unmarried Head of Household. They dropped the unmarried part.

Of course, if they lived apart for the last 6 months and each had one kid living with them all year, they could both claim HOH.
