I am getting ready to e-file my first client returns (I e-filed my personal returns previous but didn't need the consent forms). Of all the IRS forms, this form is the most poorly written form of them all with terrible instructions.

So let me summarize this as I understand it:

1) If the client is sitting their butt in front of me and enters their own pin when I e-file, no form 8879 is required.

2) If the client will not be in front of me but authorizes me to enter their pin for them or generate a pin for them, then they must fill out sections I and II of form 8879.

3) If the client will not be in front of me but authorizes me to enter their pin for them or generate a pin for them--AND I use the practitioner PIN method, then they must fill out sections I and II of form 8879 and I must fill out section III.

If I have the client selected (or if they let me generate the pin for them) then why would I even want to bother with using the Practitioner PIN method? What does it add?

Thanks,

Michael

Don't try to figure it out - have your software auto generate pins, Form 8879 should print with everything you need -

The just have the client sign the Form 8879, you sign it and file it with W-2;s and any forms with withholding tax keep for 3 years.

What a pain in the rear. I use TaxCut and it will generate the form so I will use it.

Thanks!

Related question. Is a scanned copy of the w2 sufficient to keep with the 8879's? Or must we save original "federal" "state" hard copies

And newarcher... i don't think you mean "tax cut" do you?

No, I actually meant TaxACT...ACT....ACT....ACT. Maybe I will stop typing cut soon!
