| Has anyone noticed the new method of filling in Form 8283 this year? Looks to me like some Lacerte people invaded Proseries. No WYSIWYG but rather a pure entry worksheet. I don't know if I am 'angry' or not until I have to use it. I see it does permit 'various' in certain boxes. | |

| No, I hadn't noticed, but I had noticed I couldn't open Form 8283--figured it wasn't available yet and forgot to follow up on it. Thanks for mentioning this. Now I know where to input the info. Won't have to type "Purchased" anymore, if I can remember to hit the P key in that field.

| Are you talking about ProSeries? How can you memorize the first letter of the selections? | |
| January 17, 2007 | |
| Yes, ProSeries, and I was referring to the drop-down boxes with arrows on the right. Are you asking me how do you memorize something?
P for Purchase, I for Inheritance, G for Gift, E for Exchange (on Form 8283 worksheet as how acquired the property). And the drop-down box on the Asset Entry worksheet for type of property, etc..

| I thought you meant you had to have the program memorize an entry. I see now you meant YOU had to memorize (remember) a letter that was tied to a drop-down list. Sorry! | |

| You have to start on Sch A to get to 8283; maybe it is more like Turbo Tax than Lacerte but it is a questionaire.
I turn off the drop-down lists and have to summon them if needed. I mix and match keyboard and mouse: control-tab, control c, control v for so many things. Even using my laptop I have a wireless keyboard, Logitech, but real beat up the mouse. By the way, anyone else but me buy a copy of Turbo Tax for those clients who do their return with it? I know I can import it into Proseries, but I can also do a simple review of what they did, email them their changes and let them file with only a fee for reviewing......unless I must make major changes in which case I do import.

| That's interesting D&T, can I ask what do you charge on average for that service?
| |

| Maybe that's what I need to do--find where I turn the drop-down lists back on. Looks like Intuit changed the default to OFF, because they were ON for me in prior years.

| Generally $75-150 depending on how many forms. And I don't review stock computations or splits on mutual funds.....mostly propriety. I will make suggestions if I see something. And I will not do this after the third week of March. The first time I did it, I had to re-do the return after I asked this man who is a known history professor at U of Pennna what the miscellaneous taxes on Sch A were. "Oh, that's what I paid IRS last year." He decided it was better I do the return, so my consultation turned into what is now a $250-300 return. | |

| I just noticed that for form 8283, you can't put "various" under the date acquired if you want to e-file. You can still put various for the acquisition date if you are willing to paper file. | |

| Under Tools, General Options, Data Entry, there is a block "Show Pick Lists" to check. | |

| I'm curious how other preparers come up with the donor's cost or adjusted basis of clothing, when the thrift value is over $500 and Form 8283 is required (and when the taxpayers have no clue what they paid for the clothing years ago). Do you estimate the cost of the clothing by multiplying the thrift value by something like 5 (which is the way I do it most of the time)? | |

| I've never filled in the original cost, and I have efiled this form. I'm looking now at '15% Brenda', my client who seems to have spinster aunts die every five years and leave her their houses, which she cleans out by giving to a charity thrift shop in Baltimore. E-filed and nothing on the Purchase cost line. And I found another with FMV of $1M and nothing on that line and e-filed.

| I honestly did not think I could efile an 8283 form without the cost field filled in. Thanks, DT! I wonder if I could leave the other fields blank and get away with it. My 3:30 appt will probably have more than $500.... | |

| No, Deb! Maybe it doesn't work this year. Report back. | |

| Geeez. Dang it, I've been filling them in, too, all these years...duh. And I, too, never knew that to change global print options you had to have a return open. That's really intuitive, no? | |

| Am I understanding this correctly? If my client donates Clothing worth $100 to Goodwill, Appliances worth $200 to Salvation Army, and Furniture worth $250 to someone else, I now have to fill out street, city & zip for each worksheet? That's absurd. The 8283 from the IRS website doesn't require this and I don't see it anywhere else in the form instructions. Is there a way around this? Maybe putting "unknown"? The clients aren't going to have this information. | |

| If the total of non-cash items is more than $500, Form 8283 has to be completed. This has been this way for many years. In 32 years, I can't remember it being any different than this. | |

| I think what Tilt is referring to is the new and improved Proseries worksheet. Will you get an error message if you neglect to put in the street, city and zipcode plus state? In the past, there were two lines where I might put, 'Goodwill Industries' "Wilmington DE' So I am using my return for a guinea pig. I efiled last year and just filled in the worksheet, putting a street address but omitting a city. I also did not fill in any how acquired information below 'various' for date acquired and purchase for how acquired. The return passes efile checks.

| E-filed a return on Tuesday with Form 8283 (Pro Series--accepted). Only lines I filled in were "Date of Contribution" (two lines were various), "FMV" and "Method". Those are the only lines I've filled in for years. Form total was just $690. | |

| Lacerte gives me a critical diagnostic for not filling in "city, state, zip" line, although I have 1 with no zip and it doesn't recognize it as missing. Also get a critical for using "various" as the contribution date when trying to efile. Lacerte won't let me even attempt to efile with critical diagnostics outstanding.
Deback, I also have used x5 to get a purchase value when the donation amount is over $500 for a single donation. If memory serves, Lacerte also gives a critical diagnostic if that info is missing.
