Hi Everyone,

This is my first year on my own after being in a firm for 18 years. I'm in California but I have some clients that will have to file in other states. I know at the firm I worked at, starting in the last few years we had to do something in some states to be able to sign returns since we were CPAs in California. Does anyone know where to find a list of those states that require out of state CPAs to sign up?

Thank you and I hope everyone has a great Christmas!!

You can check the dept of revenue websites for those states that you think you will be dealing with. I check the efiling requirements for those clients that have multistate returns.

Anne, assuming that you're talking about efile registration, CA was the only state who ever required registration. Every other state has accepted efiles without question. Well, one might have called one year just to verify...

JR: I had to register and submit my approval to e-file in Illinois, but I received a letter two days ago saying now this is not required. As I recall, only Illinois and California required registration.

I'm in IL...so registered here anyway. Didn't realize they'd required that from out of staters. On behalf of the professional community here, we're sorry. Really, really sorry that we don't live in like....oh, Hawaii, tho' their tax problems are odd ones.

I'm in New York and had to register with New Jersey by sending a copy of the Federal e-file acceptance form.

I am not convinced this is a seasonal gift, but the VERY BEST chart I have seen on out of state licensing for CPA's is the worksheet is here:

Registration required in Minnesota for in-state and out of state efilers. Particulars are at: http://www.taxes.state.mn.us/taxes/tax_preparers/tax_preparer_help/register_efile.shtml
