I have a potential new client who hasn't filed since 2004. Are there any good reasons not to file 2005-2007 in sequential order? They have a schedule C and I expect them to owe at least SE tax for each year.

No. Preparing those past due returns in sequential order I feel is the proper method to address your question. Receive $$ as a retainer first.

First get a signed power of attorney Second get a retainer that will cover at least 2000 through 2007 Third call the IRS to determine what they consider outstanding and take it from there. taxea

Most of our new clients have never filed. We typically file them all at once with a reasonable cause request.

We always try and file in sequential order so that any depreciation or capital loss carryovers can be picked up without having to amend returns. Taxea's advice is right on. I have found that the IRS is usually willing to be flexible and grant extensions of time to file once they know the taxpayer is addressing the situation. Also suggest following up Guya's advice to throw in a request to abate penalties. As they say "couldn't hurt".

The only time I have ever filed returns out of order was when a refund statute was about to expire and I could not get the older ones done in time.
