Have a new tax client. Married in August 2007

Wife has a Fiance' Visa (Jordanian national) No green card, no social security number now May take months before even gets green card He wants to file MFJ Any suggestions? Is there some express way to get a SSN so they can file, or must he file for an extension and just wait it out?

Try completing W-7 for ITIN.

I have a client who married someone from antoher country several years ago. We extended the return and when we finally submiitted it, she still hadn't received her SS#. I prepared the return with "applied for" in the SS# space & paper filed.

that doesn't work anymore. must have an itin as they will reject any "applied for" ssn#.

Anchorman, if the wife doesn't have 183 days of presence, just file a 6013(g) election.
