IRS requires only Part I of Form 8868 to be filled out for the automatic initial 3-month extension. Does that mean there is no signature necessary, as that section of the form appears on page 2 as part of Part II?

That's correct.

I have two forms to file and did them via E-file. Lacerte has given me conflicting messages. The first, on the Post transmission Summary report says the forms have been sent and received. The second message says "Exempt Organization Business Income Tax extensions cannot be filed electronically. You must file Form 8868 (990-T) as a conventional paper extension". Has anyone else done them successfully via E-File? the second message is an Informational Diagnostic attached to one client, but not the other.

I pulled the following from Pub 4163 page 72, the efile guide for exempt org's.

"For TY2007, Form 8868 cannot be e-filed for: <snip> - Extensions for composite Forms 990-T - Extensions for consolidated Forms 990-T"

The IRS states on its website that: "Form 990-T, Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return, is not yet available for electronic filing."

Regarding the 8868, the instructions on the form state exactly what TheTinCook just wrote. Perhaps a quick phone call to Lacerte is the best way to approach this. It sounds like the IRS will accept an electronically filed extension for a 990-T as long as it isn't composite (whatever that is) or consolidated. Perhaps Lacerte is not set up to file a 990-T extension electronically yet. I don't use Lacerte.

I have not had to file any extensions for a 990-T.

I just looked at PUB 4163 page and it says Form 8868 cannot be e-filed for:.....Extensions other than the automatic extension (Part 1). If I don't get acceptance on it tomorrow, I'll file with paper.
