I received an error message from ProSeries saying that an electronically filed tax return is being rejected by the IRS because of a duplicated social security number. I'm sure that the social security numbers on the returns are correct for my clients.

I'll go ahead and paper file the return.

My question is, does anyone know how this can happen?

Might it be a simple typographical error on someone's part or on the part of the IRS?

Might it also be identity theft?

Any ideas on what I should tell the client?

I don't want to alarm them unnecessarily, but perhaps they should take some action with regard to the possibility that someone is using their social security number.

Thanks

Identity theft is a definite possibility. I had a client whose social security number was used for several illegal immigrants on their W-4s. When he got a wopping tax bill from IRS he found out that there were several W-2s issued with his name & SSN. To IRS's credit, they straighted things out in short order. They required a police report & other documentation. I'm guessing that this is not unusual for them.

Are you sure it is not a case of a teen son or daughter filing their own return and claiming themselves.

Good point. Happens all the time.

Or could be a spouse that claimed a child and your taxpayer is trying to claim the same child. Especially in divorce or separation situations....let IRS duke it out....just paper file the return...

The only error we had this year stated specifically that the SSN problem with that of a dependent. The messages are usually pretty clear.
