I currently work for a small CPA firm in Chicago. I would like to supplement my income a bit by doing some tax preparations for few small construction firms and individual clients (1120S and 1040ez returns pretty straight forward). I have a bachelor's degree in accounting and at work my supervisor reviews my work before it goes out to the client since I am less than a year on the job fresh from school. However, if I decide to prepare these returns outside of my day job, do I need some kind of license or certification since I will be doing this as a sole proprietor? Do I have to register with the state? I am also a notary public.

Your response will be greatly appreciated,

Craig

Craig...

You need to check with your state...i.e. CA requires tax preparers to register, HI does not. You will need to check into the business license laws in your area and you will be a sole-proprietor doing a Sch C.

I don't know how specifically the CPA courses train in tax preparation. You just need to be sure you understand the tax laws for 1120's. If not, I would strongly suggest you attend basic and C/S-Corp tax prep courses.

Turbo Tax is a decent program for 1040EZ up to 1040's but ProSeries pay-per-return would be my recommendation if you intend to E-file these returns. Anuenue
