I have a client who thinks they can deduct ski clothes and mileage for being a volunteer on the ski patrol. I say no because it is not a chartiable org.

Acctng, can you shorten the title of your thread and instead type the question in the right place/box ?

Soory I'm new to this. I thought I did type in correct box. Do I type here. Client thinks he can deduct ski clothes and mileage because he volunteers on ski patrole and I say know. Not a charitable orgnization.

In the past, we were able to deduct costs of ski wear (used solely for ski patrol) equipment, mileage, dues, housing and food expenses. With the new tax law, I'm not sure how to deduct these. We are members of the National Ski Patrol, we patrol at a CA/NV Ski mountain. The ski area would obviously not be a non-profit, but we are members of a volunteer organization that patrols there with no pay benefits.

Debra, is the national ski patrol a 501c3?

yes it is a 501c3. They were also recognized with a federal charter in 1980. Info I got off their web site.
