I HAVE A SITUATION WHERE HUSBAND OWES HUGE BACK TAXES AND WANTS TO KEEP SPOUSE OFF CURRENT RETURN. SEC 151 ALLOWS HUSBAND TO CLAIM WIFE AS EXEMPTION IF NO GROSS INCOME. WIFE RECEIVES $ 5000 A YEAR SOC SEC. INCOME. QUESTION: IS SOC SECURITY INCOME RECEIPT OF GROSS INCOME?

Yes. Gross income is defined in the regulations under Sec. 61 as "taxable gross income". In this case, the Social Security benefits would be fully taxable since they live together and are filing MFS.
