I'm wondering if anyone else has heard of this group or received correspondence from them.

Their letter opens with "Tax Return Preparers Beware!" and closes with "We will be monitoring tax return preparers' modus operandi in the NYC area. We will not hesitate to report to the IRS any unscrupulous tax return preparers."

The body of the letter talks about the change in IRC 6694 penalties, etc.

I googled the group and couldn't find anything about them. The letter was mailed in New York City (I'm in Queens) but had no return address.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

They are not on Guidestar.org either. What about checking with the NY business records department? I would imagine there would be some requirement to register an organization like that.

I did the obvious (Google search) and nothing came up. Leads me to believe they're not registered anywhere. Do you have an enemy that might be trying to scare you? (half-joking)

Why not ask your state society? They may have heard of them.

Thanks all.

No enemies that I know of. I guess I'll screen any new clients very carefully. Most of the folks I do taxes for are friends or financial planning clients and the vast majority of them are honest to the extreme. If anyone tries to push the envelope on deductions, I express extreme discomfort and they typically decide to go elsewhere.

I've seen some doosey's though - as I'm sure most of you have.
