Can I deduct the mileage (one way or roundtrip) for delivery of a clothing donation, etc. to a charity site such as Salvation Army or Goodwill?

No.

Can you cite a reference for your answer?

Thank you

You are not providing service to the Salvation Army or Goodwill merely by bringing the clothing donation to them.

If you were to assist them in any way in providing THEIR services to others and incurred the mileage costs, then you'd be able to deduct it.

I reviewed pub 526 Charitable Contributions and you are right on.

Thank you for your time and input.

W/o detailed research, the secret appears to be in the statutory language, "out-of-pocket expenditure...on behalf of a [charity]." I assume that means under their auspices of, like doing their charitable work. Delivering for Meals on Wheels. Or driving your clothing donations, plus everybody else's, in your big truck, to a place to be unloaded by Goodwill for pennies a pound.

In Proseries the worksheets for donated goods asks for mileage and then transfers that to the charity milage line.

You are right. Proseries does process it. Based on my input from other sources it seems that the majority of people claim donor mileage. So be it.

Thank you for your input

This listserv is worth its weight in gold! I learn so much and am happy to once in a while be able to provide relevant input.
