If a person worked for 8 days a company that had a retirement plan, then was let go (with severance pay) and then started with another company mid-year that does not have a retirement plan, can he contribute to an IRA in 2005?

It depends on the total earned income. I think that if he made less than $60K he could deduct some also depending on how much he already contributed to his 401(K).
