Has anyone ever pondered the thought of joining the IRS?

Lately, I've considered the work-life balance (40 hours a week) and benefits of the IRS to be very appealing. Not to mention the starting salary for GS-13 is just shy of $90K.

I'm considering applying for the LMSB and see what happens. I've been at the same regional firm for 7 years and am starting to feel the "burn out" of the 75 plus hour work weeks in busy season. A change of pace and more time with the family is very appealing.

Any thoughts would be appreaciated.

Dear Midwest CPA,

I am a EA and a CPA self-employed, thinking about working for the IRS. What is LMSB and how can we get in when we are more than just beginners.

LMSB is the Large Mid Sized Business division. My understanding is they are repsonsible for the compliance of mid sized to fortune 500 companies. Check out their website.

My real reason for considering them is work-life balance. The starting salaries vary depending on region but are competitive if you base them on a strict 40 hour work week (which my wife would really love).

I'm struggling with my career ambitions and work-life balance. I know that there is more money in public accounting, but the 40 work weeks are tempting.

when you really look at things, how much money do you need. Then, take the salaries and divide by actual hours work to figure out your realized rate. Working an extra 20 to 40 hours a week to earn an extra $30,000.

Worth it?

Are you getting any comp time off in the summer to make up for your tax season hours?

Summer hours is quite common employment feature around here.

Personally I like the crunch time and then the corresponding down time in the summer.
