Mother was widowed in 2006

47 year old won with low income and health problems lived in her home for 12 months. Mother furnished over one half of his support.

Is there anyway that she can claim Head of Household Status?

Sec. 152 152(c) or (d)

It is my understanding that the son would need to have less than $3,400 of income in 2007. Tax-free income is disregarded (see the rules on which tax-free income)

The $3,400 is under the qualifying relative use.

Under the qualifying child, there is a permanent and totally diabled at any point during the year possiblity. Mom might be able to take son as a dependent and HOH.

Son must qualify as a dependent in order for mom to file as HH.
