| My sister in law gave me a Brother inkjet all in one and I didn't get around to using it for some time and it dried out and died. Could have come that way, I don't know.

| I like Brother brand lasers. They've got some all-in-ones. | |

| I have the Dell 1815dn. Its a laser printer, scanner (pdf formats!!) fax and copier.
It prints duplex copies also, saving paper. I have one phone line and the copier is smart enough to determine if a fax or voice call is coming in.

| My experience with small office and home office multi-purpose devices like the Canon has been very poor and very frustrating.
They simply don't hold up very well, are slow and seem to cost a lot more to operate than they should. Worst yet, it seems like the manufactures discontinue models quickly (six months, maybe?) and driver support (for scanning to PDF and advanced printing) is just enough to work. Instead of spending $150 to $250 every year or so on a small- or home-office device, I bit the bullet and bought a used Kyocera-Mita KM-4530 for $520 from a local dealer. It was bigger than what I wanted (footprint and performance) but I couldn't pass it up at that price. The thing is an absolute beast. It'll do 45 pages per minute, duplex, scan to PDF and will even print on 11x17 paper (nice for large spreadsheets; my eyes ain't what they used to be). The monthly duty cycle is 175,000 pages. Needless to say, I haven't printed 175,000 pages in the three years I have owned it. I haven't even had to put toner in the thing. Except for adding paper, it hasn't needed any maintenance. The shop that sold it to me called a few weeks back to sell me something bigger. With the residential real estate market in the dumps, there are a lot of these larger multi-purposes devices coming off lease from mortgage brokers, title companies and real estate offices. Cheap, cheap, cheap! If you're looking for a workhorse that'll last well into the next decade, I'd call a your local office equipment shops and see if they can get you a much better machine for about the same price. It's worth a call.
