| From form 8633 I see that participants of IRS e-file program should be either US citizens or legal resident aliens. However I see that many Canadian accountants e-file US tax returns. Is it possible for Canadians or nationals of other countries to become authorized IRS e-file provider?
Thanks, ekambara | |

| The UK had a pilot program about 3 years ago - it lasted around 3 months and was then abolished. The IRS have not had the money since to be able to do FBI type background checks internationally, so the answer is NO! | |

Box 7 on IRS Form 8633 (Application to Participate in the IRS e-file Program) asks if the applicant is a US citizen or a "legal resident alien". To participate in the IRS e-file Program, you must be a "legal resident alien" (lawful permanent resident). An E2 visa won't help since it is a non-immigrant visa and doesn't mean a permanent home. Getting a "green card"(if you can get one) is the best way to go.
Checking the "legal resident alien" box on Form 8633 will raise a flag with the IRS and they probably will issue a LOI (letter of inquiry). Be prepared!!! | |
