I have responded to several (10) CP-2000 letters since Feb. They are being sent to the Atlanta office where they languish. I know 12-16 weeks is the modus operandi but sheesh!

Would it speed things up if I dropped the responses off at the local office here... or do they just forward them to Atlanta too.

Any suggestions.... I get called about every other week from multiple clients. I'm thinking of changing my phone greeting to "Let's give it two more weeks".

Discussion: Oh, Atlanta aka Chamblee

It is not just you; that post was from 2006 and it still goes on this year. I had some success calling the Practitioner Hotline, where I was given a fax number that works [I almost always fax the response]. I would not turn anything like a CP-2000 reply into a local office; I've had clients drop off 1040s with checks near the deadline only to find the check, while cashed, is not applied to the return and they get billed [the client who did this insisted her father, an Ex-IRS man, told her that was the way to go, that or certified mail].

Be patient. If they are slow if you send the response to the right place, why do you think sending the response to the wrong place will help?

The value of calling the hotline is to see if your case is being worked on, and if there are notations that they have received information.

To show the difference in Service Centers, today I received an adjusted bill on a CP-2000 for 2006 on an unreported stock sale. The client had let the matter slip his notice because of a problem with the 'bottle' so that when time came to respond, we were already in 90-day status, but he provided a cost basis and I faxed same to IRS in Philadelphia on September 4th. The response came today, less than 11 weeks, and cut the bill from 11K to four hundred dollars.

Maybe I should get a P.O. Box in Philly for my clients and their CP-2000s! :-)

A. do you mail or fax the responses? Faxing is quickest. Mail takes forever to process. I've heard every letter has to be checked for anthrax. Call in 60 days and make sure your response was received and see if it is assigned. But call the 800 number on the notice; it will get you to the AUR unit, and maybe even Chamblee itself (the number that ends with 3009 is shared by Chamblee, Austin & Fresno) where they can tell you what is going on. If you get chamblee, they can even pull the case.

I will begin faxing immediately.

We support anthrax-free CP-2000 responses. :-)
