| I am getting the usual cold calls from brokers looking to network. I don't mind meeting them because if we end up with a common client it is good to put a face to the voice on the phone. It seems like recently they call ask me to lunch then when the check comes wait for me to pick it up and make a big deal about paying "I'll get it this time". They called me, set up the lunch, I sit and listen to their pitch then they want me to pay? I may just start turning down the meetings.
End of rant. | |

| No, you continue to take their lunch invitations, but when the check comes to the table, you quickly and politely say "THANK YOU SO MUCH for inviting me to lunch and to meet you today." This reinforces the fact that you do, in fact, appreciate the free lunch. And you pre-empt their trying to make you feel guilty.

| Since I wouldn't send my worst enemy to these people to begin with, why should I have lunch with them? Anyone in today's world that does not take the time to be educated enough to handle his own investments deserves what he gets (which won't be much).
P.S. I had one second thought, it might be worth meeting with them to find out what they consider to be good advice, and then rush to do the opposite.

| Well, that's true. I have had very good luck with reading all the reports and analysis of this group. http://www.levy.org/
It's not investment advice, and it's pretty dense reading; but if you have any background in economics at all, it will give you a good macroeconomic outlook. They were right on target back in 2004 about a coming personal debt crisis. You have to figure that if the consumer was 1/3 of the economy (2/3?), that same 1/3 will be in the toilet for some time since the banks are just not going to be handing out money like the old days; and incomes are just not cutting it for most people without the help of the credit card, or home equity loan.....
