Looking for some feedback on what to charge for bookkeeping services. I have something in mind, but feedback would be greatly appreciated.

We charge $200 to $500 a month depending how much work is involved. We charge aprox 3 times what we pay our employees as a mark-up.

My cheapest is also around $200 per month but I've got one at a fixed rate of $775 per month and I've got a couple that we charge hourly and they average close to $2,000 per month each. So it can vary a lot depending on how much work you do.

My staff billing rates are 3-4 times their hourly pay rates. It sounds like a lot to charge that much but it is necessary to cover employee medical insurance, workers comp, payroll taxes, vacation, sick days, and time not billable.

I'd be interested in knowing how you decide which clients pay a fixed monthly rate and which ones by the hour. Does it just depend on whether their business is steady from month to month?

Bookeeping services I charge by the hour or flat fee, depending on the frequency and what is needed. I have one client who I act as receiver for and I charge 2K per month for that service, but I have some that just need bank recs and some aje's and I charge them hourly. It mostly depends on how much time I think it will take to perform the tasks and then I develop a flat fee for recurring or I just invoice them for the hourly rate at 75.00 per hour. Seems to work for me :)

How much would you charge just for monthly work: bank recs (15-20 transactions), credit card expense AJE's, monthly payroll service (for 4 employees) and quarterly filings? I've been charging $150/mo. but thought it's too low, however, this is one of my few faithful clients who have been with me since day 1 several years ago. I now charge slightly higher for new clients, but think I'm still overworked and underpaid!

Ahhh Bean;

We ALL are underpaid and overworked. I have a client who has been with me for over 6 years; it is a medium sized church that I remotely connect to for budgets, contributions and year end stuff. They pay me only 25.00 per week, so it amonts to 100.00 per month, but as you said, they have been faithful and I don't realize that I am making anything on them except some headaches from time to time. I think 150.00 a month is good for something which takes only an hour or so each month. Seems to me to be the case with this church for me. I would however charge slightly more for quarterly filings for a corporation because of the increased time and paper flow that accompany's that. Just mho

Good to know that I'm not the only one underpaid and overworked!:-) Sandysea, I did the same thing for a church except not getting paid as much as you, so I finally told them to purchase Shelby Software, made specifically for non-profits so they can tract all kinds of contribution, accounts payable, budgets and even prepare payroll.

Raise your fees!. You might lose a few clients. Result....."Make more, work less".
