| I was a bone marrow donor. Can I deduct any costs related to it? They paid everything except mileage, and my lost wages for the week. Can I dedust these as donations? | |

| The lost wages you never had so you can not deduct something you never had. The milage - I would say if the bone marrow went to a non-profit hospital for them to do with it what they may you could deduct your milage. But if it was for a specific individual then no, as they would not be a non-profit.

| I would say the mileage would be deductible as a medical expense. taxea | |

| NO!!!
I had very long hair and decided to cut it. I made a donation of the hair to an organization that makes wigs for sick children who need them. My cost involved the cost of a haircut. It's not deductible. You can't get a benefit from the donation of body parts.

| You may be eligible for a state tax benefit. In which state do you reside? | |

| You are allowed deductions for the medical expenses involving transplants, including transportation (see Pub 502 Under "Transplants"). Following this I would expand it to include your situation. You would deduct it on the medical part of Sch A which must be over the 7 1/2% of your AGI. You cannot deduct lost wages, but I would take round trip mileage to the hospital and any medical expenses like bandages, perscriptions, hospital/dr charges, etc.
re: birgcpa, I also had a client who donated her hair to a similar organization. No deduction for the haircut because no medical expense involved, and no deduction for charity because it is a body part.
