| If I prepare a clients return and it is ready for e-file pending some additional info from the client but the client goes and gets another preparer to send their return. How do I avoid this situation? How do I protect myself from doing the work and not getting paid for it? | |

| There is not a thing you can do unless you get a retainer. Stalking is probably illegal where you live. | |

| Well, most of us don't check credit for new clients, don't feel bad. When I first started out I was so happy to have billable time, I did not always worry about client's ability to pay. Never rule out telling a new client "I think it will cost X$, and my policy for new clients until I get to know them is to collect this as a deposit in advance." You'll find out in a hurry if they are trying to play you. | |

| I get money up front if they want multiple years done, or if I don't know them. Otherwise its pay when you get the stuff. Very few people get a return before they pay. I have some neighbors that I let pay me when they get the refund. One of the kids came by last night with cash. Gotta love 'em. And he's bringing a friend over tomorrrow. | |
