| I felt that 1040man's usage of 'R U' for 'Are you' was a good time to point out the continued decline of the American education system, until I remembered he is the 75yr old+ founder of NATP. I am impressed!

| 1040man:
Natalie contacted me to tell me that her bookmarks haven't been emailing her either. We looked at a few things, but couldn't figure it out. Now there's two of you, so I am going to have to dig deeper! Mine seem to be working fine, but there must be something wrong. - Tim Doyle, TaxAlmanac Moderator - Talk to me 16:31, 19 September 2007 (CDT)

| Huh, didn't know they were supposed to! I've never gotten emailed updates to bookmarks. I figured I was just saving them for faster future reference. | |

| mine are working fine, get an email each time another post is added, of course this is when I remember to check 'Watch this discussion' | |

| Maybe a preference item that I don't have set. Actually, I don't want to be notified, so maybe that's why... | |

| If you bookmark a page or discussion...
If you've entered and validated your email address... and if you've selected the preference checkbox "Send me an email when a page I have bookmarked is changed" ... then you should receive an email when a bookmarked page is edited. Note that you only receive ONE email until you visit the page again, so if there are a dozen edits you won't be swamped with emails. Once you visit the page, the trigger is reset. Also, you will not receive an email if YOU are the person who makes the edit. However, it appears that for some reason this isn't always working properly currently, and I need to figure out why.

| Jeff, this is a really nice feature, and I've noticed I spend a lot more time on this site when I don't receive the notices. I was wondering what was happening with this issue, so I'm glad someone else brought it up. | |

| This sounds really technical. Bookmarking a discussion - Oh MY! | |

| Is this how I get Tim's attention?? Tim, my profile is still gone and I can't figure out how to put it back. | |

| You know, one of the things about these forums as a method of communication is that we lose the verbal part of communication -- the intonations, etc. -- as well as the nonverbal cues. Tim is only one person, with a few others who help out on the side, working with many people who use this forum. I just wanted to say I appreciate the work done. | |

| As do I. Thank you, Tim. Thank you also for reminding us of the Code of Conduct. | |

| Yeah, I don't get the emails either and have set my preferences to receive them. I figured my server level spam filters (with Network Solutions) were somehow catching them and deleting them before they could get to me. | |

| Tim - I did a search of Travel expenses last night simply because, well, traffic was bad and I was actually just killing time until I could go home. But anyway, the other day I started a discussion of travel expenses and it lead to a nice and informative discussion that could be really helpful in the future to others. I entered simply travel, and a bunch of hits came up, but not the thread I started. Each of the hits had the word travel in them somewhere. Then I tried travel expense, which is the name of the thread, it came up along with some others. I'm just curious why it didn't come up with the group when I only entered the word travel? I'm not the greatest of searchers anyway, but this time I kind of new what to expect. | |

| Actionbsns:
The search results that come up displays the first 20 matches, with a link to the next 20, etc. I'll bet your discussion was on one of those next sets of pages. If you search for two words, such as travel expense, it'll return all pages that have either of those terms. It's much better to put quotation marks around it, such as "travel expense", which will return only those pages with that phrase, typically a much smaller and more accurate set of results. - Tim Doyle, TaxAlmanac Moderator - Talk to me 11:19, 27 September 2007 (CDT)

| Tim, how does it display out of the database? They seem to be random, not in most recent to oldest order, which would be nice. | |
| September 27, 2007 | |
| That's a very good question, but one that I don't know the answer to. Let me see if I can figure out what's happening under the hood.

| I believe I now know the answer. The search results are displayed by order of the page creation date, oldest to newest. This is the default behavior for the software, but it seems as though it is completely backwards from what we need. The results should probably have the most recently created pages (discussions are pages too) displayed at the top. Even better, if we can manage it, would be to sort by last edit date and display the most recently edited pages at the top.
Great question, JR1! - Tim Doyle, TaxAlmanac Moderator - Talk to me 14:14, 27 September 2007 (CDT)

| I think we'd all prefer last edit date first, since that's how we think of the forum, in terms of time. Glad I asked, but it's the main reason I didn't use the search feature much, since the results never made sense. | |
| September 27, 2007 | |
| I understand. In the meantime, when you get search results back, click on the "500" link (to display up to 500 matches instead of the default 20), then scroll to the bottom of the list to see the most recent pages. Also, there are two sets of matches returned - the top set of pages are those that match the word or words in the title of the discussion or page, the 2nd set has matches in the contents of the discussion or page.
