Client rented an apartment with no renters insurance. Had to leave town suddenly, and friends agreed to repaint apartment as required in lease. Friends drip paint in hallway and parking lot hauling paint out, and renter now has a bill for several thousand for carpet replacement and parking lot cleanup.

Is this a deductible loss for the client? Can't find any definitive answer in this.

assuming personal use apartment, client has no deductible loss, just sad loss, and assuming friends means free, you get what you pay for,,, probably loss of friends, too,

I was afraid that was the case. Thanks!

You are saying client had renters sign a lease which required only a paint job to live there?

No, she was a renter. She had permission to paint walls, as long as she repainted to original color upon vacating. She had a damage deposit (now gone), and landlord demanding several thousand additional for dripped paint in hallway and parking lot by friends who painted for her.

Though friends had her permission to paint, was hoping maybe somehow she could at least get a deduction on her loss.

Oh, your client was the tenant - then I agree with Taxman.
