| I was at a meeting several years ago and a person from the IRS Austin Service Center said that if a return needs to be amended prior to the due date, that a 1040X was not needed, they will accept a later filed return as long as it is filed timely. What has been your experience with this? | |

| My only experience with this was that, having heard what you heard (that a 1040x was not needed before 4/15), I sought to confirm this with a phone call to the preparer's hot line. The IRS person told me that a 1040x was needed. I never followed up to get an explanation of the disparity. | |

| Hello to everyone. I had some clients come to me during the off season. The IRS has rejected the returns, so I called the IRS and spoke with the agent(s). The agent(s) informed that since the return had been rejected a 1040x was not necessary. A 1040x is only necessary if the original return is accepted by the IRS and corrections have to be made. | |
