Just curious as to how many do 990 returns for nonprofits and if and how much you charge.

The first ones I started doing a few years ago were the local PTA's at schools and a couple of volunteer fire departments all of which are very well organized and not really time consuming to do. For these I did "gratis" due to realizing most barley get by on what they raise and really and I am involved in several charities and I know how you "beg, borrow and steal" for everything you can get. I have never had one of these not offer to pay or even ask for a discount last year I picked up a couple more that were more detailed and even though I did not charge them all of them gave me a decent "tip" for the work.

I do seem to pick up clients from these organizations and that is where I figure it is worth the extra time and all of them always send me a thank you note as well.

Do the rest of you get many of these, I am not in the habit of working for free but I do feel a certain amount of community service is expected, guess this was the way I was raised.

Well, I hate 'em. So much work, such a screwed up return with the Sch. A...and how do you charge a nonprofit? I charge 500 when I'm in a good mood and they can break out the income and expenses so that I can use them. It's really too little, but it is what it is. I'm trying to boost it up, and have a time or two. It's worth it. Now, with the required filings for the small outfits, even, maybe we can do the EZ for cheap instead.

I hate them too. I do a couple for supersmall's (< $50,000 income) at no charge. I'm on the Board & Treasurer of a 501C3 that has an EA do the return. He charged $500 for the 2006. BUT the President of the organization is a client of his and I'm confident he's charged big dollars AND since I do the bookkeeping for the 501C3, the financials are squeeky clean and all he has to do for the return is put numbers in boxes.

I'm on the board on a 501C3 and am happy to be the past treasurer. We now have a bookkeeper on the board who is the current treasurer. Since I'm on the board, I've done the 990 gratis.

I do a few 990's, but they all do a few hundred thousand and my minimum is $750 unless I am doing the audit then it is included in the fee.
