In four years of practice I finally have a client who donated a car to a local charity. However, my software seems to be a little unclear. My questions is this: with a 1098-C, must the return be filed by mail or can it be efiled? Software keeps saying PIN must not be entered. Thanks for any help.

You can efile, but you'll have to send in Form 8453 and the 1098-C without using a PIN.

? Why, Deb? I've just got one, too, but didn't actually enter the 1098C, merely the info onto the charitable stuff form...it should go thru like that.

The 1098-C must be attached if the deductible amount is over $500. I see no problem with e-filing.

There is no problem efiling returns with a 1098-C, but the 1098-C has to be sent to the IRS with Form 8453. This was a new requirement beginning for 2005 returns. Go into your EF screen and look at the list of forms that are required to be sent in with Form 8453. Form 1098-C is listed, and Riley is correct that Form 1098-C must be attached to Form 8453, when the deductible amount is over $500.

I have a 1098C and am also using Pro Series and also getting the PIN error. I understand what Deb is saying. Here's where I'm confused: The 1098C has no value on it bc the truck is being stripped for parts. The TP gave a FMV of $300 - $500 for the truck. If the value is < $500, do I even have to deal with the 1098C at all? Can I just delete it from the return and efile as usual, and not send in the 8453/1098C at all?
