Can an LLC filing as a partnership own a single member llc, and if so, how do you account for it in a tax return? Is it just all rolled into one, or is there some other way to do it?

Katie J went thru and extensive list of examples, and permutations, on the Tax Forum recently. You could probably find it with a search, or look back a few pages. If it was a sole proprietorship, no. If the SMLLC was an S. Corp., probably so, but recheck elegibility for S. status.

AAS, try to find Katie J's post. The person with the Scd. C SMLLC could very well contribute the property and obligations of the SMLLC to the MMLLC. By becoming a member of the MMLLC, as an example. Surgent-McCoy... do web search, has come good CPE materials on partnership/llc's. it think the web addy is http://www.surgent.com
