Client died in 2007; had little money, under $600 income in the estate so would not have to file under those criteria, also, no deductions to pass on to beneficiary. Executrix obtained a FID number, however, and received the letter from IRS acknowledging the EIN and advising to file 1041 with a due date, pretty normal stuff. Question is: must the 1041 be filed because the EIN was assigned? Isn't the IRS going to be looking for a 1041 even if all zeros? Thanks.

If the estate had distributable net income and distributions were made the income will carry on the K-1's and under $600 becomes meaningless as a filing requirement. If not you can always answer the IRS letter with not required to file.
