I am doing a 1040X for a NOL carry back: Should I attach the 1040 form that will result from the change? (not the 1040x, the 1040 amended).

If yes to the above question, I have a quick question: Let's say the original return showed an amount due with the return (before extension). When doing the amended tax return, should I put the amount due on the original return as a tax payment on the amended 1040? If I don't, then the refund line on the amended 1040 (not the 1040X) does not match the 1040x.

Thanks!

I see someone had the good sense to get the "Important Question" out of the title.

You should only attach any forms that change.

there was considerable debate 2 or 3 months ago on this very topic - what to attach to an amended return. While there might be a 'correct' answer, no one at the IRS would think less of you if you included everything anyway.

Discussion:1040x attach amended 1040 as well?

of course, the yellow search box also comes in handy

Your reasoning in the second point is the exact reason I would not attach the revised 1040. I seem to recall filing a 1040X showing a payment that had not been made and having it bounce, but then it could be that my memory is faulty. The instructions do say to enter any tax paid, not any tax due.
