I have a Taxpayer who qualifies for the Head-of-Household Filing Status with the qualifying person being the taxpayer's dependent mother. I e-filed this tax return and it was rejected because a duplicate Social Security Number. The qualifying person (taxpayer's mother) filed a tax return to get the Economic Stimulus Payment. Normally, the qualifying person does not have a filing requirement. I told the taxpayer a paper needs to be filed.

I believe that the taxpayer still qualifies for the Head-of-Household Filing Status even through the qualifying person filed a tax return claiming the exemption.

1. What do you think? 2. Or do I amended the qualifying person's tax return as a dependent claimed on someone's return? 3. Any comments.

Thanks, Dan

A dependent is not allowed to receive the Stimulus Payment. Thus, you prepared the return properly. Mother may need to repay the erroneous stimulus payment.
