Article adapted from IRS web site IRS Revises Application Form for Charitable Organizations

The Internal Revenue Service released a revised Form 1023 (Application for Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code) on November 1, 2004. The new form is designed to streamline the application process for charitable organizations seeking tax-exempt status, and will help the IRS spot potentially abusive charities. The new form also provides the IRS with additional information it needs to ensure compliance with the tax laws.

The new Form 1023 Package consolidates all forms necessary to apply for exemption, is organized in a logical, sequential way and includes a handy checklist to help reduce common errors. Though the new form is longer, it is much easier to use than the old version, and will ultimately speed up the application process by reducing errors and minimizing contact with the IRS.

The revised Form 1023 is available online.
